Imsouane Day Trip from Essaouira: A Day at the Long Right

Some places earn their reputation. Imsouane is one of them. A small fishing village on the Atlantic coast, north of Agadir and south of Essaouira, with a bay that produces one of the longest right-hand waves in Morocco. When surfers talk about Morocco, this is usually somewhere on the list.

For most people staying in Essaouira, the easiest way to ride it is a full-day trip. This is what that day actually looks like.

The Day Starts at 8 in the Morning#

The pickup depends on the group. Small private groups get picked up directly from their accommodation. Larger gatherings meet in front of our school space in Essaouira. The vehicle depends on the group size too: smaller groups travel in our main car, bigger ones move in a van.

We leave Essaouira at 8 in the morning. The early start is intentional. The drive takes you south along the coast, and getting on the road before the day warms up means more time at the bay and less time fighting traffic. Conversations in the car are usually quiet at first. People sleeping, drinking coffee, watching the landscape change from city to countryside to coast. By the time you arrive, everyone is awake and the day really begins.

Arriving at Imsouane#

The bay opens up as you come down the road into the village. From a certain point you can see the wave from the cliff above, peeling along the headland for what looks impossibly long. That is the moment most people get quiet for a different reason.

We park, and the day starts at its own pace. There is no rush. The first decision is breakfast. The team can organize a group breakfast at one of the local spots, or people can sort their own. Same with lunch later: you can join the group or do your own thing. Some people bring food with them and eat on the beach. The structure is flexible because the day is yours.

Once everyone has eaten and the gear is ready, we head to the beach for the briefing.

The Bay and Why It Works for Beginners#

This is the part most people are surprised by. Imsouane is famous for the length of its ride, and that length is exactly what makes the bay one of the most beginner-friendly waves in Morocco.

The wave breaks in shallow, sheltered water inside the bay. It is mellow. It does not slam. It rolls. You get a long, gentle face that gives you time to get up, find your balance, and stay on the wave for far longer than most beach breaks would allow. For someone learning, that extra time on the wave is the difference between a frustrating session and a real one.

The briefing on the beach covers safety, positioning, how the wave moves, where to paddle out, and what to do if you get out of position. The team warms the group up, takes you through your pop-up technique once more on the sand, and then walks you down to the water. From there it is a normal surf session: you paddle out with the instructor, you catch waves, you fall, you reset, you go again. The instructor is in the water with you, giving corrections and pointing you toward the right waves.

For intermediate riders, the bay still delivers. The wave is long enough that you can work on turns, cutbacks, and trim across a full ride. You are not fighting for one short section. You have the time to actually surf.

If you have never surfed before and you are wondering whether you can do this trip, the answer is yes. Imsouane bay is suited for beginners, and the team is there to walk you through every step. What the Day Actually Feels Like#

Imsouane is not a city. It is a small fishing village with a working harbour, a few cafes and restaurants, and a community that has been here long before the surf reputation arrived. The vibe is beach vibe. Relaxed, slow, salt in everything. People eat fish that was caught that morning. The pace is set by the tide and the light.

You spend the morning in the water. You take breaks on the beach when you need them. You watch other riders take long rides across the bay while you wait for your turn. The conversation between riders happens naturally, the way it always does when people are sharing the same water and the same wave for the same reason.

When the surf time is done, we head out for a late lunch. By this point the energy has shifted. The group is tired in a good way. Salt is dried on your skin. Everyone is hungry. Lunch is usually long and unhurried. We can stay for a sunset drink if the group wants it, watching the day end over the bay before the drive back.

The return to Essaouira happens in the evening. People sleep in the car. People scroll through the photos they took. By the time you walk back into the medina, you have done one of the most complete surf days the Moroccan coast has to offer.

Who This Trip Is For#

The Imsouane day trip is open to all levels. Beginners get the gentle face of the bay and the time to actually learn on a real wave. Intermediates get the length and consistency to work on technique without fighting for position. Anyone who has surfed before knows that combination is rare.

It is also a trip for people who want more than just a session. The drive, the village, the food, the bay itself, the sunset — these are all part of the day. If you are looking for a clean session-and-go format, this is not that. If you are looking for the kind of day you remember years later, this is closer to it.

Trips run depending on conditions and group size. You can book the Imsouane day trip through our excursions or contact the team to talk through dates, group, and what to expect on the day.
